Green Peas Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN green peas market soared to $X in 2022, growing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Green Peas Production in ASEAN

In value terms, green peas production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 83%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the Philippines (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together comprising 85% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +0.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

The average green peas yield reached X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield recorded mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the green peas yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the green peas harvested area in ASEAN was estimated at X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to green peas production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

For the third year in a row, ASEAN recorded decline in shipments abroad of peas (green), which decreased by -25.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green peas exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 44%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the major exporters of peas (green) in 2022, amounting to approx. 46% and 36% of total exports, respectively. Malaysia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Myanmar (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 16% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest green peas supplier in ASEAN, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam stood at +32.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (-2.5% per year) and Malaysia (+6.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 74% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+21.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Green Peas Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, the amount of peas (green) imported in ASEAN soared to X tons, increasing by 22% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green peas imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 46% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) took a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (15%) and Indonesia (6.2%). Singapore (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +42.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest green peas importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 89% share of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +39.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, green peas import price increased by +67.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
