Photographic Film Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the ASEAN photographic film market, when its value increased by 49% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, photographic film production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X square meters of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed were exported in ASEAN; growing by 25% on 2020. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic film exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Malaysia was the main exporter of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X square meters, which was near 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X square meters), generating a 16% share of total exports.

Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed. Singapore (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

Among the main exporting countries, Singapore, with a CAGR of +6.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, photographic film export price increased by +74.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 72%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per square meter), while Malaysia stood at $X per square meter.

In 2021, purchases abroad of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed was finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, photographic film imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a slight decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Thailand (X square meters) was the major importer of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed, achieving 35% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X square meters), Malaysia (X square meters), Singapore (X square meters), Indonesia (X square meters) and the Philippines (X square meters), together mixing up a 64% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +14.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest photographic film importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together accounting for 64% of total imports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 25%. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
