Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pigeon peas exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 1,672% against the previous year. Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, overseas purchases of pigeon peas decreased by -23.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pigeon peas imports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 69% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), creating a 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) - together made up 9.4% of total imports.

Imports into Malaysia decreased at an average annual rate of -2.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+41.3%) and Singapore (+24.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +41.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Malaysia (+50 p.p.), Singapore (+19 p.p.) and Vietnam (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Myanmar (-3 p.p.) and Thailand (-68.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 92% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 6.1%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +51.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pigeon peas import price increased by +67.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 65% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
