In 2022, overseas shipments of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Indonesia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 78% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.8% share, followed by Malaysia (6.6%). Vietnam (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass exports, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+11.5%) and Thailand (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Vietnam (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+59 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-13.2 p.p.) and Vietnam (-14.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest pigments, opacifiers and colours supplier in ASEAN, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 9.6% share.
In Indonesia, pigments, opacifiers and colours exports increased at an average annual rate of +27.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (-0.4% per year) and Thailand (+0.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, declining by -6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, overseas purchases of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass increased by 0.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together generating 75% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total imports.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass in ASEAN, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam totaled +11.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-1.8% per year) and Thailand (-3.0% per year).
