Pineapple Market Size in ASEAN
The ASEAN pineapple market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Pineapple Production in ASEAN
In value terms, pineapple production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were the Philippines (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together comprising 86% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +4.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average yield of pineapples in ASEAN reduced modestly to X tons per ha, waning by -3.1% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 6.7% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the pineapple harvested area in ASEAN reduced to X ha, which is down by -2.1% against the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 6.4% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.
Pineapple Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of pineapples, when their volume increased by 11% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 96%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pineapple exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
The Philippines dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.3% share, followed by Malaysia (5.2%). Indonesia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pineapple exports from the Philippines stood at -2.5%. At the same time, Indonesia (+55.1%) and Thailand (+27.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +55.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand and Indonesia increased by +8.6 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in ASEAN, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 7% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Philippines stood at +12.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+26.1% per year) and Malaysia (-4.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 55%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, supplies from abroad of pineapples increased by 2.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pineapple imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Singapore represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 72% of total imports. Brunei Darussalam (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (5.6%).
Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of pineapples. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+26.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brunei Darussalam (+18 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -5.9% and -12.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pineapples in ASEAN, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.
In Singapore, pineapple imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brunei Darussalam (+20.2% per year) and Malaysia (-3.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 9.7%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
