In 2022, the amount of plastic tableware and kitchenware exported in ASEAN surged to X tons, picking up by 21% against 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports totaled $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 24%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) represented the largest exporter of plastic tableware and kitchenware, creating 42% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (17%) and Indonesia (8.4%). The following exporters - Singapore (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - together made up 6.3% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 80% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +19.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Plastic Tableware And Kitchenware
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, imports of plastic tableware and kitchenware in ASEAN shrank to X tons, waning by -7.8% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +11.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 52%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the five major importers of plastic tableware and kitchenware, namely Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Thailand (X tons) held a 6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cambodia (5.9%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 66% share of total imports. Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Cambodia, with a CAGR of +27.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -5.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 28%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
