The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip were exported in ASEAN; growing by 6.8% against 2020 figures. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +59.9% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 10%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) was the key exporter of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, making up 58% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together achieving a 36% share of total exports. The following exporters - Singapore (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-cellular polyethylene film exports from Malaysia stood at +4.8%. At the same time, the Philippines (+52.4%), Vietnam (+22.6%), Indonesia (+5.3%) and Thailand (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +52.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+7.8 p.p.) and the Philippines (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-2.3 p.p.), Malaysia (-3.1 p.p.) and Singapore (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest non-cellular polyethylene film supplier in ASEAN, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 10% share.
In Malaysia, non-cellular polyethylene film exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+2.7% per year) and Vietnam (+17.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, non-cellular polyethylene film imports in ASEAN amounted to X tons, leveling off at 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of non-cellular polyethylene film imports in 2021 were Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together recording 97% of total import.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +33.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 61% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 35%.
Among the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +17.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild downturn. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
