Plum And Sloe Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN plum and sloe market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Plum And Sloe Production in ASEAN

In value terms, plum and sloe production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 1,177% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of plum and sloe production was Myanmar (X tons), accounting for 100% of total volume.

In Myanmar, plum and sloe production expanded at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the period from 2012-2022.

Plum And Sloe Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, plum and sloe exports in ASEAN shrank remarkably to X tons, waning by -79% on the previous year. In general, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 421%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 460% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Myanmar prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), making up a 9.7% share of total exports. The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plum and sloe exports from Myanmar stood at -8.4%. At the same time, Vietnam (+14.6%) and Malaysia (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia increased by +4.2, +2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest plum and sloe supplying countries in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Myanmar ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +12.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 136% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Plum And Sloe Imports

Imports in ASEAN

For the fourth year in a row, ASEAN recorded decline in overseas purchases of plums and sloes, which decreased by -4.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 334% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 212% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of plum and sloe imports in 2022 were Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together amounting to 79% of total import. Vietnam (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +33.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest plum and sloe importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +29.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plum and sloe import price increased by +57.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 38%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
