Pork Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN pork market fell modestly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Pork Production in ASEAN

In value terms, pork production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 39%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Vietnam (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), with a combined 82% share of total production. Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +2.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of pork in ASEAN reached X kg per head, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for pork production in ASEAN; stabilizing at the previous year's figure. In general, the number of producing animals, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs at X heads in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Pork Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, shipments abroad of pork decreased by -4.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 69%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pork exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) represented roughly 95% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), comprising a 4.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 95% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +30.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 29%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Pork Imports

Imports in ASEAN

For the third year in a row, ASEAN recorded growth in supplies from abroad of pork, which increased by 20% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, pork imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Philippines (X tons) represented the major importer of pork, mixing up 61% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Singapore (X tons). All these countries together took near 36% share of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pork imports into the Philippines stood at +21.1%. At the same time, Vietnam (+24.9%), Malaysia (+3.2%) and Singapore (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +24.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of the Philippines (+25 p.p.) and Vietnam (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-4.3 p.p.) and Singapore (-31.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest pork importing markets in ASEAN were the Philippines ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 94% share of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +26.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -9.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 16%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
