Potato Chips Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN potato chips market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -7.7% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of potato chips increased by 1.6% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 42%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato chips exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 57% of total exports in 2022. The Philippines (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Singapore (10%), Indonesia (8.5%) and Vietnam (5.5%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +94.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 74% of total exports. The Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +108.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

Potato chips imports surged to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 16% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +89.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, potato chips imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +69.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The Philippines (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 80% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Brunei Darussalam (4.8%). Cambodia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +29.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potato chips in ASEAN, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.

In Singapore, potato chips imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Philippines (+41.4% per year) and Malaysia (+7.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -14.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
