Potato Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN potato market rose to $X in 2021, with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Potato Production in ASEAN

In value terms, potato production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

The country with the largest volume of potato production was Indonesia (X tons), comprising approx. 55% of total volume. Moreover, potato production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Myanmar (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Indonesia totaled +1.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Myanmar (-1.4% per year) and Vietnam (-2.8% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of potatoes in ASEAN declined to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the potato yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The potato harvested area stood at X ha in 2021, with an increase of 2.3% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 3.4%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the potato harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, shipments abroad of potatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Vietnam (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) was the key exporter of potatoes in ASEAN, making up 80% of total export. Singapore (X tons) held an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (7.8%). Myanmar (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Vietnam (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 71% of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +31.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -7.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 13%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Potato Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, the amount of potatoes imported in ASEAN skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 31% against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, potato imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the main importers of potatoes in 2021, recording near 32% and 31% of total imports, respectively. Thailand (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (9%), Singapore (7%) and the Philippines (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the Philippines (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potatoes in ASEAN, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam stood at +14.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (-2.8% per year) and Thailand (+3.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, rising by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
