After two years of growth, overseas shipments of prepared skins of birds decreased by -23.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 149%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, prepared birds skin exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 172%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 5.6% share, followed by Indonesia (5.5%). Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to prepared birds skin exports from Vietnam stood at -4.6%. At the same time, Singapore (+26.6%), Myanmar (+7.5%) and Indonesia (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2022. Singapore (+5.2 p.p.) and Indonesia (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -8.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest prepared birds skin supplier in ASEAN, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 2.6% share.

In Vietnam, prepared birds skin exports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+27.2% per year) and Indonesia (+17.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 23%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of prepared skins of birds increased by 99% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

At the same time, Myanmar (+32.1%), Singapore (+27.0%), the Philippines (+20.1%) and Malaysia (+14.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+8.9 p.p.), Singapore (+5.2 p.p.), the Philippines (+3.3 p.p.) and Malaysia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Indonesia and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -3% and -15.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared skins of birds in ASEAN, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 4.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 2.5% share.

In Vietnam, prepared birds skin imports decreased by an average annual rate of -8.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+31.0% per year) and Myanmar (+20.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, prepared birds skin import price increased by +61.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 22%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
