The ASEAN preserved tomato market rose remarkably to $X in 2021, increasing by 6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption posted a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tomato production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production posted a prominent expansion. Preserved tomato exports dropped to X tons in 2021, waning by -10.6% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tomato exports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) was the main exporter of preserved tomatoes, achieving 54% of total exports. Singapore (X tons) held a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (9.2%) and Malaysia (7.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +7.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest preserved tomato supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 91% of total exports. Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 6.8%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +2.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, preserved tomato export price increased by +86.0% against 2013 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

Preserved tomato imports dropped dramatically to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -15.7% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of preserved tomato imports in 2021 were Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together recording 73% of total import. Thailand (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together took near 23% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +32.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 5.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 16%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Cambodia ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
