The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Singapore represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 49% of total exports. Thailand (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Indonesia (17%) and Malaysia (8.2%).
Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the primary cells and primary batteries exports, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+3.3%), Thailand (+2.9%) and Malaysia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of primary cells and primary batteries decreased by -11.3% to X units in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, primary cells and primary batteries imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Malaysia (X units), Vietnam (X units), Singapore (X units) and Thailand (X units) represented roughly 87% of total imports in 2022. Indonesia (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by the Philippines (X units). All these countries together took approx. 10% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +19.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 81% of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +19.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
