The ASEAN printing and writing paper market reduced notably to $X in 2022, which is down by -71.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Printing and Writing Paper in ASEAN

In value terms, printing and writing paper production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of printing and writing paper exported in ASEAN dropped to X tons, declining by -13.8% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printing and writing paper exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia was the main exporter of printing and writing paper in ASEAN, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (6.5%).

Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of printing and writing paper. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Singapore (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia and Thailand increased by +3.6 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest printing and writing paper supplier in ASEAN, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Indonesia stood at -1.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-0.1% per year) and Singapore (-6.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Printing and Writing Paper

Imports in ASEAN

For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in overseas purchases of printing and writing paper, which decreased by -26% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printing and writing paper imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the six major importers of printing and writing paper, namely Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest printing and writing paper importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. The Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +12.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Philippines ($X per ton) and Myanmar ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
