Pumpkin Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN pumpkin market amounted to $X in 2022, with an increase of 3.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Pumpkin Production in ASEAN

In value terms, pumpkin production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 115%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Indonesia (X tons) remains the largest pumpkin producing country in ASEAN, comprising approx. 56% of total volume. Moreover, pumpkin production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Philippines (X tons), twofold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Indonesia totaled +2.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Philippines (-1.6% per year) and Thailand (-3.3% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in ASEAN stood at X tons per ha, remaining constant against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 22%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the pumpkin yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in ASEAN stood at X ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1.4%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pumpkin production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, pumpkin exports in ASEAN rose markedly to X tons, surging by 12% on the year before. Overall, exports posted modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 236% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pumpkin exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 240%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) was the main exporter of pumpkin (squash and gourds), comprising 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons), constituting a 31% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +117.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest pumpkin supplier in ASEAN, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Myanmar ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 11% share.

In Malaysia, pumpkin exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Myanmar (+79.3% per year) and Vietnam (+7.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Pumpkin Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas purchases of pumpkin (squash and gourds) decreased by -6.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pumpkin imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Singapore prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), comprising a 6.3% share of total imports. Brunei Darussalam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of pumpkin (squash and gourds). At the same time, Malaysia (+11.7%) and Brunei Darussalam (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +11.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam increased by +4 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pumpkin (squash and gourds) in ASEAN, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 8.1% share of total imports.

In Singapore, pumpkin imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+18.6% per year) and Brunei Darussalam (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country
