In 2021, the ASEAN cattle hide and skin market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a deep slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons), together accounting for 67% of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +5.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

The average cattle hide and skin yield surged to X kg per head in 2021, jumping by 22% on 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the yield attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in ASEAN contracted to X heads, dropping by -14.9% on 2020. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals recorded a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the number of producing animals increased by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number hit record highs at X heads in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, the amount of raw hides and skins of cattle exported in ASEAN expanded rapidly to X tons, with an increase of 6.8% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 22%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 91%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 54% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together held near 39% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw hides and skins of cattle exports, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+12.1%), Brunei Darussalam (+11.9%) and Thailand (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malaysia (-7.3%) and Myanmar (-23.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Brunei Darussalam increased by +39, +6.8, +4.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 89% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Cambodia, Myanmar and Brunei Darussalam, which together accounted for a further 8.9%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +17.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -16.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports of Raw Hides And Skins of Cattle

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, supplies from abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) represented the largest importer of raw hides and skins of cattle, making up 61% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together held near 39% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cattle hide and skin imports into Thailand stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Cambodia (+30.1%) and Indonesia (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-22.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia increased by +20, +9.7 and +4.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of cattle in ASEAN, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand stood at -9.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+14.6% per year) and Vietnam (-24.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
