Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +20.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +92.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) represented the major exporter of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles, comprising 66% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Vietnam (11%) and Indonesia (4.7%). Singapore (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+20.3%), Indonesia (+15.9%) and Malaysia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+7.4 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-4.6 p.p.) and Malaysia (-5.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest refractory bricks, blocks and tiles supplier in ASEAN, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 13% share.
In Thailand, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+3.6% per year) and Vietnam (+23.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 18%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, approx. X tons of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles were imported in ASEAN; increasing by 33% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +4.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 54%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Indonesia represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 52% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 40% share of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Myanmar (-1.6%), the Philippines (-1.9%) and Thailand (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+15 p.p.) and Vietnam (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Philippines (-2.7 p.p.), Malaysia (-7.2 p.p.) and Thailand (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 81% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 22%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
