The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 34%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes exported in ASEAN skyrocketed to X tons, surging by 21% against the previous year. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +36.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 56% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held a 31% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (8.3%). Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +77.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest roasted coffee substitutes supplier in ASEAN, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 2.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +3.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+6.1% per year) and Indonesia (+48.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 43%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Roasted Coffee Substitutes Imports
Imports in ASEAN
For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in purchases abroad of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 92%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Vietnam (X tons), distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) were the main importers of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes, together constituting 97% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +52.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest roasted coffee substitutes importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +43.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 36%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
