In 2021, the ASEAN non-decaffeinated roasted coffee market decreased by -2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 14%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Non-Decaffeinated Roasted Coffee Exports
Exports in ASEAN
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) decreased by -26.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports declined slightly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Malaysia represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 55% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Singapore (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together took near 42% share of total exports.
Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) exports, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+8.4%) and Vietnam (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Singapore (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+47 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-18.6 p.p.) and Singapore (-26.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 87% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +32.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, the amount of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) imported in ASEAN skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 28% against the year before. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports in 2021 were Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together recording 88% of total import. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), constituting a 7.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Cambodia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - each recorded a 3.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +27.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +13.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -21.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
