Roasted Malt Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN roasted malt market stood at $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the market value increased by 6.8% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, roasted malt production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 8.1%. In 2022, overseas shipments of roasted malt were finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 630%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Thailand (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - each reached a 4.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to roasted malt exports from Vietnam stood at +9.9%. At the same time, Thailand (+97.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +97.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+33 p.p.) and Thailand (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -6.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest roasted malt supplier in ASEAN, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 7.6% share of total exports.

In Vietnam, roasted malt exports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+148.7% per year) and Singapore (-11.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -22.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 75%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+26.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Roasted Malt Imports

Imports in ASEAN

Roasted malt imports dropped sharply to X tons in 2022, which is down by -43% on 2021. In general, imports recorded a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, roasted malt imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cambodia represented the major importer of roasted malt in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 42% of total imports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Myanmar (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together took near 50% share of total imports. The following importers - Thailand (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +2.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest roasted malt importing markets in ASEAN were Cambodia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Myanmar ($X), together accounting for 85% of total imports.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +0.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
