Coniferous Roundwood Production in ASEAN
In value terms, coniferous roundwood production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 33%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, overseas shipments of roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -82.9% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports recorded a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 173%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 205% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Malaysia was the largest exporter of roundwood (coniferous) in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X cubic meters, which was near 68% of total exports in 2022. Indonesia (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Vietnam (12%). Myanmar (X cubic meters) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Malaysia decreased at an average annual rate of -20.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+32.3%) and Vietnam (+19.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +32.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Myanmar (-37.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+17 p.p.), Vietnam (+12 p.p.) and Malaysia (+6.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Myanmar saw its share reduced by -23.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest coniferous roundwood supplier in ASEAN, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Malaysia totaled -12.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+20.4% per year) and Vietnam (+19.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 262% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per cubic meter), while Vietnam ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Coniferous Roundwood Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of roundwood (coniferous) were imported in ASEAN; growing by 41% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 81%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Vietnam prevails in imports structure, amounting to X cubic meters, which was near 92% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Malaysia (X cubic meters) and the Philippines (X cubic meters) - each reached a 4% share of total imports.
Imports into Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +14.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+44.9%) and Malaysia (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +44.9% from 2012-2022. Vietnam (+38 p.p.) and the Philippines (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roundwood (coniferous) in ASEAN, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 1.5% share of total imports.
In Vietnam, coniferous roundwood imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+10.0% per year) and the Philippines (+25.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per cubic meter, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per cubic meter), while Malaysia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
