Rye Market Size in ASEAN

In 2022, the ASEAN rye market decreased by -49% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption saw a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Rye Production in ASEAN

In value terms, rye production rose markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -8.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 79%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Vietnam (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of rye production, accounting for 77% of total volume. Moreover, rye production in Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malaysia (X tons), with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Vietnam was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Thailand (+169.6% per year) and Malaysia (-12.5% per year).

Rye Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of rye were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 936%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rye exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 291% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Singapore represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), achieving a 28% share of total exports. Indonesia (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rye exports, with a CAGR of +25.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+7.5%) and Indonesia (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Singapore (+63 p.p.), Malaysia (+14 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest rye supplying countries in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 33% share of total exports.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +26.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 128% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 134%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rye Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, approx. X tons of rye were imported in ASEAN; dropping by -39.4% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports recorded a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 532%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rye imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 632%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) represented roughly 71% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together mixing up a 24% share of total imports. Singapore (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Singapore (with a CAGR of +3.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest rye importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +18.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -25.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 120%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
