In 2022, the amount of sack kraft paper exported in ASEAN declined notably to X tons, waning by -20.9% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 68%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sack kraft paper exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 85%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the key exporter of sack kraft paper in ASEAN, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Indonesia (6.3%). The following exporters - Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sack kraft paper exports from Thailand stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Vietnam (+44.2%), Indonesia (+8.9%) and Malaysia (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +44.2% from 2012-2022. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Vietnam (+19 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore and Thailand saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -16.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest sack kraft paper supplier in ASEAN, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand totaled +6.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+32.2% per year) and Singapore (-2.7% per year).

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sack kraft paper increased by 2.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sack kraft paper imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons), distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented the major importers of sack kraft paper, together mixing up 95% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +3.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest sack kraft paper importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 85% of total imports.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
