In 2021, approx. X tons of sacks and bags of paper were exported in ASEAN; waning by -1.9% on the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. In 2021, Malaysia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) was the major exporter of sacks and bags of paper in ASEAN, mixing up 88% of total export. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), achieving an 8.7% share of total exports. The Philippines (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 13%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, paper bag imports in ASEAN stood at X tons, with an increase of 10% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +91.5% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 23%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper bag imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +113.5% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest levels of paper bag imports in 2021 were Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons), together finishing at 96% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +45.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest paper bag importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports. Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +30.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
