In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of sawnwood (non-coniferous) were exported in ASEAN; waning by -7.3% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sawnwood (non-coniferous) exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Thailand was the major exporting country with an export of around X cubic meters, which accounted for 64% of total exports. Malaysia (X cubic meters) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (8.3%). Myanmar (X cubic meters), Vietnam (X cubic meters) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of sawnwood (non-coniferous). At the same time, Indonesia (+15.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2022. Myanmar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (-3.4%), Malaysia (-8.3%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (-26.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand and Indonesia increased by +22 and +7.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest sawnwood (non-coniferous) supplying countries in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +15.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per cubic meter, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price posted measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per cubic meter), while Thailand ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of sawnwood (non-coniferous) were imported in ASEAN; growing by 6.6% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sawnwood (non-coniferous) imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Vietnam (X cubic meters) and the Philippines (X cubic meters) were the key importers of sawnwood (non-coniferous) in 2022, resulting at approx. 44% and 33% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X cubic meters) and Indonesia (X cubic meters), together constituting a 19% share of total imports. Malaysia (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +18.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sawnwood (non-coniferous) importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports.
The Philippines, with a CAGR of +18.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, falling by -23.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per cubic meter), while Thailand ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
