In 2022, the ASEAN semi-chemical wood pulp market increased by 5.2% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, approx. X tons of semi-chemical wood pulp were exported in ASEAN; falling by -26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 110%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, semi-chemical wood pulp exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 183%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Indonesia (X tons), together amounting to 99% of total export.

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semi-chemical wood pulp exports, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia increased by +9.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) also remains the largest semi-chemical wood pulp supplier in ASEAN.

The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Indonesia.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Indonesia amounted to -5.6% per year.

Imports in ASEAN

For the fifth consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in overseas purchases of semi-chemical wood pulp, which increased by 20% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 156% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, semi-chemical wood pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 158% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Indonesia represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), committing a 12% share of total imports.

Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +15.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+29.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +29.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam increased by +7.6 percentage points.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semi-chemical wood pulp in ASEAN, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia amounted to +16.7%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam amounted to $X per ton.
