Semiconductor Device Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, the ASEAN semiconductor device market increased by 45% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Semiconductor Device Production in ASEAN

In value terms, semiconductor device production contracted remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X units of semiconductor devices were exported in ASEAN; almost unchanged from 2020 figures. Overall, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 21%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device exports fell slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 30%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Philippines was the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which resulted at 61% of total exports. Singapore (X units) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (11%) and Malaysia (11%). Indonesia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from the Philippines decreased at an average annual rate of -12.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+53.0%) and Malaysia (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +53.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-3.1%) and Indonesia (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore increased by +11, +7.6 and +6.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest semiconductor device supplying countries in ASEAN were the Philippines ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Singapore ($X), together comprising 92% of total exports. These countries were followed by Indonesia and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 6.5%.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +20.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in overseas purchases of semiconductor devices, which increased by 45% to X units in 2021. In general, imports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, semiconductor device imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The Philippines dominates imports structure, recording X units, which was near 77% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X units) and Singapore (X units). All these countries together held near 18% share of total imports. Malaysia (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semiconductor devices imports, with a CAGR of +53.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+25.3%), Indonesia (+12.4%), Singapore (+4.3%) and Malaysia (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Philippines increased by +64 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest semiconductor device importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +22.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -19.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 9.4%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (-1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
