Sesame Seed Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN sesame seed market totaled $X in 2022, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Sesame Seed Production in ASEAN

In value terms, sesame seed production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -13.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 66%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of sesame seed production was Myanmar (X tons), accounting for 86% of total volume. Moreover, sesame seed production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Cambodia (X tons), with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Myanmar amounted to -2.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Thailand (+0.3% per year) and Cambodia (+1.1% per year).

The average sesame seed yield fell to X kg per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 2.8%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of sesame seed production in ASEAN amounted to X ha, remaining constant against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the sesame seed harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Sesame Seed Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of sesame seed decreased by -39.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 86%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sesame seed exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 87%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Myanmar prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Myanmar decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +4.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest sesame seed supplier in ASEAN, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports.

In Myanmar, sesame seed exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+1.2% per year) and Vietnam (+9.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, falling by -26.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sesame Seed Imports

Imports in ASEAN

Sesame seed imports rose slightly to X tons in 2022, surging by 3.4% on 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sesame seed imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the major importer of sesame seed in ASEAN, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 60% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (10%), Malaysia (9.6%) and Singapore (4.7%). The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -2.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+5.7%) and Thailand (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +5.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.0%), Malaysia (-1.1%) and Singapore (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+5.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-7.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sesame seed in ASEAN, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 9.6% share.

In Vietnam, sesame seed imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+9.9% per year) and Malaysia (+7.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
