In 2021, the ASEAN sheepskin and lambskin market decreased by -3.4% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, consumption, however, posted a pronounced expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 80%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Indonesia (X tons) remains the largest sheepskin and lambskin producing country in ASEAN, comprising approx. 90% of total volume. Moreover, sheepskin and lambskin production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malaysia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Myanmar (X tons), with a 3% share.
In Indonesia, sheepskin and lambskin production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Malaysia (+5.9% per year) and Myanmar (-13.9% per year).
In 2021, the average yield of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in ASEAN surged to X kg per head, with an increase of 23% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum.
In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in ASEAN contracted sharply to X heads, waning by -16.1% compared with 2020 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18%. As a result, the number of animals produced attained the peak level of X heads. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of this number remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, overseas shipments of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) decreased by -30.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports rose to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Myanmar (X tons) was the major exporter of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), making up 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), mixing up a 16% share of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skins (without wool) exports, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malaysia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Lao People's Democratic Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-3.6%) and Thailand (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+47 p.p.) and Malaysia (+6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -9.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplying countries in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), Myanmar ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 79% of total exports. Indonesia and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of -0.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 50% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), when their volume decreased by -41.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons), distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main importers of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), together making up 95% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +46.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in ASEAN, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Malaysia totaled +1.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-0.0% per year) and Vietnam (-2.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by 52% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
