Shelled Hazelnut Market Size in ASEAN

For the third consecutive year, the ASEAN shelled hazelnut market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 0.2% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Shelled Hazelnut Production in ASEAN

In value terms, shelled hazelnut production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of production peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Shelled Hazelnut Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, shipments abroad of shelled hazelnuts decreased by -42.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 128%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) were the main exporters of shelled hazelnuts in 2021, recording approx. 45% and 38% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), creating a 14% share of total exports. Indonesia (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +59.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest shelled hazelnut supplier in ASEAN, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 13% share.

In Singapore, shelled hazelnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+87.2% per year) and Malaysia (+1.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 96%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+17.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Shelled Hazelnut Imports

Imports in ASEAN

For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in overseas purchases of shelled hazelnuts, which decreased by -1.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 50% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Indonesia (15%) and Thailand (10%). The following importers - Vietnam (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - each reached a 6.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to shelled hazelnut imports into Malaysia stood at -8.4%. At the same time, Vietnam (+23.7%), Indonesia (+5.8%) and Singapore (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +23.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Philippines (-1.1%) and Thailand (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+11 p.p.), Indonesia (+9.5 p.p.) and Vietnam (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -9.5% and -15.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported shelled hazelnuts in ASEAN, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 15% share.

In Malaysia, shelled hazelnut imports contracted by an average annual rate of -7.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+5.4% per year) and Indonesia (+5.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, shelled hazelnut import price increased by +15.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
