Slate Market Size in ASEAN
In 2021, the ASEAN slate market decreased by -14.5% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed significant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Slate Production in ASEAN
In value terms, slate production fell markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 62%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Slate Exports
Exports in ASEAN
In 2021, overseas shipments of slate decreased by -21.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 235%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, slate exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 94%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Indonesia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), creating a 6% share of total exports.
Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the slate exports, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012 to 2021. Vietnam (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Indonesia increased by +41 percentage points.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest slate supplier in ASEAN, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports.
In Indonesia, slate exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 81% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-9.6%).
Slate Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, supplies from abroad of slate increased by 39% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, slate imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Malaysia represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 49% of total imports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Vietnam (12%), Singapore (7.9%) and the Philippines (7%). The following importers - Cambodia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to slate imports into Malaysia stood at -5.2%. At the same time, the Philippines (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +8.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cambodia (-3.6%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (-4.6%), Singapore (-6.1%), Vietnam (-21.6%) and Indonesia (-25.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+20 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+5.8 p.p.), the Philippines (+5.7 p.p.), Singapore (+2.9 p.p.) and Cambodia (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Indonesia (-13 p.p.) and Vietnam (-26.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported slate in ASEAN, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 16% share.
In Malaysia, slate imports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-23.2% per year) and Singapore (-6.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
