The ASEAN drawing board market fell modestly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, drawing board production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 34%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

For the fifth year in a row, ASEAN recorded decline in overseas shipments of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces, which decreased by -17.3% to X units in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 288% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, drawing board exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 222%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Indonesia (X units) was the main exporter of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces, constituting 59% of total exports. Vietnam (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X units) and Singapore (X units). All these countries together held near 38% share of total exports. The Philippines (X units) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +66.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+141.5%) and Vietnam (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +141.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-13.9%) and Singapore (-18.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+58 p.p.), Vietnam (+10 p.p.) and the Philippines (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -25% and -30.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 88% of total exports. Singapore and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.8%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +157.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Drawing Board Imports
Imports in ASEAN
For the third year in a row, ASEAN recorded growth in supplies from abroad of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces, which increased by 1.9% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports saw tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 39%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, drawing board imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Philippines (X units), distantly followed by Malaysia (X units), Thailand (X units), Indonesia (X units) and Singapore (X units) represented the key importers of slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces, together making up 91% of total imports. Cambodia (X units) and Vietnam (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest drawing board importing markets in ASEAN were Malaysia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +10.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
