Sleeping Bag Market Size in ASEAN

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the ASEAN sleeping bag market, when its value decreased by -14.2% to $X. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Sleeping Bag Production in ASEAN

In value terms, sleeping bag production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +53.3% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, the amount of sleeping bags exported in ASEAN surged to X units, picking up by 62% compared with 2020 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 134% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, sleeping bag exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 176%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Vietnam (X units) represented the main exporter of sleeping bags, mixing up 70% of total exports. Cambodia (X units) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Myanmar (12%). Thailand (X units) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +43.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Myanmar (+175.9%) and Cambodia (+42.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +175.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+36 p.p.), Myanmar (+12 p.p.) and Cambodia (+7.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -34.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest sleeping bag supplier in ASEAN, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cambodia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 6.3% share.

In Vietnam, sleeping bag exports increased at an average annual rate of +42.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+57.9% per year) and Myanmar (+158.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, growing by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per unit), while Myanmar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, purchases abroad of sleeping bags decreased by -12% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after five years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sleeping bag imports reached $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the key importer of sleeping bags in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X units), the Philippines (X units), Singapore (X units) and Cambodia (X units), together comprising a 43% share of total imports. Indonesia (X units) and Vietnam (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of sleeping bags. At the same time, Cambodia (+38.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +38.5% from 2012-2021. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.8%), Singapore (-4.3%), the Philippines (-6.7%) and Malaysia (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+13 p.p.) and Cambodia (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Philippines (-4.1 p.p.) and Malaysia (-13.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sleeping bag importing markets in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Cambodia ($X), together accounting for 67% of total imports.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +39.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
