Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, snail exports in ASEAN dropped dramatically to X tons, which is down by -27.3% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 264%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, snail exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 136% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Indonesia represented the largest exporter of snails (except sea snails) in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 68% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), achieving a 21% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to snail exports from Indonesia stood at -2.7%. At the same time, Malaysia (+95.4%) and Vietnam (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +95.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Myanmar (-9.7%) and Thailand (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia increased by +20, +15 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest snail supplier in ASEAN, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 4.9% share.
In Indonesia, snail exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+12.8% per year) and Myanmar (-4.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, overseas purchases of snails (except sea snails) decreased by -28.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 1,440% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, snail imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 517%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Malaysia prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 90% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), creating a 4.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Myanmar (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - together made up 4.4% of total imports.
Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the snails (except sea snails) imports, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022. Vietnam (-1.2%), Indonesia (-8.9%) and Myanmar (-26.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+51 p.p.), Myanmar (+2.5 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-2.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported snails (except sea snails) in ASEAN, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 7.1% share.
In Malaysia, snail imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+9.1% per year) and Vietnam (+3.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 55% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 150%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
