Sorghum Market Size in ASEAN

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the ASEAN sorghum market, when its value decreased by -8.5% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Sorghum Production in ASEAN

In value terms, sorghum production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of sorghum production was Myanmar (X tons), accounting for 81% of total volume. Moreover, sorghum production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), fivefold.

In Myanmar, sorghum production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average yield of sorghum in ASEAN shrank to X tons per ha, waning by -1.6% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the sorghum yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of sorghum were harvested in ASEAN; shrinking by -6.3% against the year before. In general, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then dropped in the following year.

Sorghum Exports

Exports in ASEAN

For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in overseas shipments of sorghum, which increased by 3.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 568% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sorghum exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 519% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) was the largest exporter of sorghum, comprising 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up a 17% share of total exports.

Exports from Myanmar increased at an average annual rate of +23.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+180.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +180.0% from 2012-2022. Myanmar (+82 p.p.) and Thailand (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest sorghum supplier in ASEAN, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In Myanmar, sorghum exports expanded at an average annual rate of +25.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -10.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while Thailand amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+3.8%).

Sorghum Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, sorghum imports in ASEAN rose significantly to X tons, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, imports posted a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Philippines prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 96% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sorghum imports, with a CAGR of +8.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Philippines (+44 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sorghum in ASEAN, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 3.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Philippines totaled +8.9%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the Philippines totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+6.9%).
