Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, shipments abroad of splitting, slicing or paring machines decreased by -37.5% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 100%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood slicing machine exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 93%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which recorded 33% of total exports. Malaysia (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Singapore (X units). All these countries together held approx. 64% share of total exports. Myanmar (X units) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +36.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) emerged as the largest wood slicing machine supplier in ASEAN, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia amounted to +28.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+3.7% per year) and Singapore (-14.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

Wood slicing machine imports reached X units in 2021, with an increase of 7.4% compared with 2020. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 48%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood slicing machine imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 101%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Indonesia was the key importing country with an import of around X units, which reached 57% of total imports. The Philippines (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X units), Thailand (X units) and Malaysia (X units). All these countries together held near 33% share of total imports. The following importers - Cambodia (X units) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X units) - together made up 5.4% of total imports.

Imports into Indonesia decreased at an average annual rate of -6.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Philippines (+31.2%), Cambodia (+30.9%), Thailand (+22.4%), Vietnam (+14.9%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +31.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+11 p.p.), Vietnam (+7.9 p.p.), Thailand (+5.4 p.p.), Cambodia (+3 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -6.7% and -25.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest wood slicing machine importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. Thailand, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +35.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -30.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a notable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 70%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
