T-Shirt Market Size in ASEAN
The ASEAN t-shirt market surged to $X in 2022, increasing by 319% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
T-Shirt Production in ASEAN
In value terms, t-shirt production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
T-Shirt Exports
Exports in ASEAN
T-shirt exports declined markedly to X units in 2022, waning by -30.1% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 278% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, t-shirt exports declined to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam was the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which recorded 43% of total exports. Thailand (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cambodia (X units), Indonesia (X units) and Malaysia (X units). All these countries together took near 49% share of total exports. The following exporters - Myanmar (X units) and Singapore (X units) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.
Exports from Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+42.6%), Thailand (+15.5%), Malaysia (+14.1%), Cambodia (+12.9%), Singapore (+10.3%) and Indonesia (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +42.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar increased by +7.2, +3.7 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest t-shirt supplier in ASEAN, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cambodia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 10% share.
In Vietnam, t-shirt exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+4.2% per year) and Indonesia (-3.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (-6.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
T-Shirt Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, overseas purchases of t-shirts decreased by -1.4% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -37.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of t-shirt imports in 2022 were Malaysia (X units), Singapore (X units), Indonesia (X units), Thailand (X units) and Vietnam (X units), together accounting for 92% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X units), generating a 5.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest t-shirt importing markets in ASEAN were Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports. Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +15.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
