In 2021, the ASEAN talcum powder market decreased by -2.2% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a modest increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, talcum powder production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Talcum powder exports expanded remarkably to X tons in 2021, increasing by 10% against 2020 figures. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +107.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 88% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, talcum powder exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), comprising an 8.7% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the talcum powder and other powders for cosmetic use exports, with a CAGR of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+8.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -3.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest talcum powder supplier in ASEAN, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +3.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+0.3% per year) and Malaysia (-6.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 81%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN
In 2021, purchases abroad of talcum powder and other powders for cosmetic use decreased by -3.4% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after seven years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, talcum powder imports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -36.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Philippines represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 45% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Malaysia (14%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (5.3%), Indonesia (5.1%), Thailand (4.9%) and Vietnam (4.7%).
The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the talcum powder and other powders for cosmetic use imports, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Thailand and Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (-2.7%), Malaysia (-3.6%) and Indonesia (-4.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Philippines and Lao People's Democratic Republic increased by +36 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 73% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +26.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 10%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
