Tomato Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN tomato market rose slightly to $X in 2021, surging by 3.3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Tomato Production in ASEAN

In value terms, tomato production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Indonesia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of tomato production, comprising approx. 66% of total volume. Moreover, tomato production in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Philippines (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X tons), with a 12% share.

In Indonesia, tomato production increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the Philippines (+1.0% per year) and Malaysia (+4.0% per year).

The average tomato yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2021, flattening at the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the tomato yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of tomatoes in ASEAN dropped modestly to X ha, approximately equating 2020. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Tomato Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, the amount of tomatoes exported in ASEAN shrank modestly to X tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 22%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Malaysia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), making up a 6.5% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of tomatoes. At the same time, Thailand (+17.8%) and Vietnam (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +17.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Thailand (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-5.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest tomato supplier in ASEAN, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia stood at -1.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+5.0% per year) and Vietnam (+6.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Tomato Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of tomatoes, when their volume increased by 9.2% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 10%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 28%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Singapore was the largest importer of tomatoes in ASEAN, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 77% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Brunei Darussalam (X tons). All these countries together took near 19% share of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of tomatoes. At the same time, Vietnam (+31.0%), Brunei Darussalam (+12.3%) and Malaysia (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +31.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Vietnam increased by +7.2, +3.3 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomatoes in ASEAN, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Brunei Darussalam, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore amounted to +4.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+10.2% per year) and Brunei Darussalam (+13.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
