Toothpaste Market Size in ASEAN

For the third year in a row, the ASEAN toothpaste market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.4% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Toothpaste Production in ASEAN

In value terms, toothpaste production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X tons of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices were exported in ASEAN; with a decrease of -2.6% on the year before. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, toothpaste exports expanded to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand represented the largest exporter of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices in ASEAN, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 73% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (8.6%). The following exporters - Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Singapore (+22.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-1.4%), Malaysia (-2.1%) and Indonesia (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Thailand increased by +10 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest toothpaste supplier in ASEAN, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +2.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+3.1% per year) and Vietnam (-1.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 23%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Toothpaste Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, supplies from abroad of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices decreased by -1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -10.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, toothpaste imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.0% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) represented the main importer of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, achieving 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Cambodia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), together comprising a 42% share of total imports. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to toothpaste imports into the Philippines stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+42.9%), Vietnam (+12.3%), Cambodia (+5.6%), Malaysia (+2.8%) and Singapore (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +42.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+7.5 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+4.4 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-1.9 p.p.), Malaysia (-2.9 p.p.) and Thailand (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Philippines stood at +13.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+5.0% per year) and Vietnam (+15.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
