For the fourth year in a row, the ASEAN transport container market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 24% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Transport Container Production in ASEAN
In value terms, transport container production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, transport container exports in ASEAN surged to X units, rising by 47% on 2021 figures. In general, exports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 244% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, transport container exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 201%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand represented the major exporting country with an export of about X units, which recorded 59% of total exports. Singapore (X units) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (9.1%) and the Philippines (5.9%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to transport container exports from Thailand stood at +15.3%. At the same time, Singapore (+55.5%) and the Philippines (+33.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +55.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-13.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines increased by +32, +23 and +5.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 92% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, which accounted for a further 1.1%.
The Philippines, with a CAGR of +40.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Transport Container Imports
Imports in ASEAN
For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded growth in overseas purchases of transport containers, which increased by 112% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 255%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, transport container imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 395% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Singapore (X units) and Indonesia (X units) were the largest importers of transport containers in ASEAN, together resulting at approx. 82% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X units), committing a 16% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Singapore (with a CAGR of +107.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest transport container importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports.
Indonesia, with a CAGR of +34.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -13.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 152% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-8.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
