Turkey Meat Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN turkey meat market declined sharply to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -21.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a noticeable decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Turkey Meat Production in ASEAN

In value terms, turkey meat production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of turkey meat production was the Philippines (X tons), accounting for 83% of total volume. Moreover, turkey meat production in the Philippines exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), fivefold.

In the Philippines, turkey meat production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.

The average turkey meat yield totaled X kg per head in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 0.2% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for turkey meat production in ASEAN; approximately equating the previous year's figure. In general, the number of producing animals recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by 1.5%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

Turkey Meat Exports

Exports in ASEAN

Turkey meat exports amounted to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 71%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, turkey meat exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -23.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 89%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), constituting a 7.9% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the turkey meat exports, with a CAGR of +31.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Singapore (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+85 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-4.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest turkey meat supplier in ASEAN, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam totaled +31.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (-5.8% per year) and Malaysia (+7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -10.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 97%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Turkey Meat Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, turkey meat imports in ASEAN dropped dramatically to X tons, which is down by -24.3% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 55%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 48% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) took a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cambodia (8.5%), the Philippines (5.8%) and Singapore (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported turkey meat in ASEAN, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam amounted to +7.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+8.1% per year) and Singapore (+0.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
