For the eighth year in a row, ASEAN recorded growth in overseas shipments of unbleached sulphite pulp, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 38%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, unbleached sulphite pulp exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Singapore dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), achieving a 6.3% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Singapore was also the fastest-growing in terms of the unbleached sulphite pulp exports, with a CAGR of +11.4% from 2012 to 2022. Malaysia (-6.0%) and Indonesia (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+31 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-14.8 p.p.) and Malaysia (-16.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest unbleached sulphite pulp supplier in ASEAN, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.
In Singapore, unbleached sulphite pulp exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+0.3% per year) and Indonesia (-12.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 22%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Unbleached Sulphite Pulp Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of unbleached sulphite pulp, when their volume increased by 1.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a dramatic decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, unbleached sulphite pulp imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 77%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Philippines was the main importer of unbleached sulphite pulp in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 65% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), achieving a 28% share of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the unbleached sulphite pulp imports, with a CAGR of -19.1% from 2012 to 2022. Vietnam (-20.4%) and Indonesia (-23.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-12 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest unbleached sulphite pulp importing markets in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 98% share of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of -9.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -13.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 89%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
