After two years of decline, shipments abroad of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers increased by 58% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Indonesia prevails in papers structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers exports from Indonesia stood at +3.7%. At the same time, Vietnam (+14.9%), Malaysia (+8.1%) and Singapore (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers supplier in ASEAN, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Indonesia totaled +1.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+3.4% per year) and Malaysia (+6.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, falling by -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Thailand ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ASEAN

Imports of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers reduced modestly to X tons in 2021, dropping by -2.5% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the key importer of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers in ASEAN, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together held near 42% share of total imports. The following importers - the Philippines (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.

Imports into Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Philippines (+7.8%) and Indonesia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +7.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-2.5%), Malaysia (-5.1%), Singapore (-12.1%) and Cambodia (-23.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+26 p.p.), Indonesia (+5.6 p.p.) and the Philippines (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia, Singapore and Cambodia saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -7% and -26.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers in ASEAN, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam stood at +7.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-1.6% per year) and Indonesia (-1.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, falling by -12.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
