For the third year in a row, the ASEAN vegetable market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Vegetable Production in ASEAN

In value terms, vegetable production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together comprising X% of total production. Myanmar, Thailand, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of vegetables in ASEAN shrank to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of vegetables production in ASEAN fell slightly to X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to vegetable production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of vegetables, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable exports contracted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the five major exporters of vegetables, namely Myanmar, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Lao People's Democratic Republic, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), generating a X% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total exports. Myanmar, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Indonesia and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, the amount of vegetables imported in ASEAN rose sharply to X tons, surging by X% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, vegetable imports amounted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Malaysia represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Thailand (X%), Singapore (X%) and Vietnam (X%). Brunei Darussalam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
