Wallpaper Market Size in ASEAN

After three years of decline, the ASEAN wallpaper market increased by 3.2% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Wallpaper Production in ASEAN

In value terms, wallpaper production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 35%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Wallpaper Exports

Exports in ASEAN

In 2021, overseas shipments of wallpaper and wall coverings were finally on the rise to reach X tons after seven years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a slight expansion. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia was the main exporter of wallpaper and wall coverings in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 50% of total exports in 2021. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 31% share, followed by Vietnam (8.7%) and the Philippines (7.6%). Thailand (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +34.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) emerged as the largest wallpaper supplier in ASEAN, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 14% share.

In Singapore, wallpaper exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (-0.6% per year) and the Philippines (+37.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wallpaper export price increased by +63.8% against 2014 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Wallpaper Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, supplies from abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings decreased by -2.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports saw a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a mild decline. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of wallpaper imports in 2021 were Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together resulting at 81% of total import. Singapore (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8% share, followed by the Philippines (5.5%). Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 63% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 35%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +9.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
