The ASEAN wheeled loader market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, exports of wheeled loaders, crawler shovel loaders, front-end loaders in ASEAN amounted to X units, picking up by 3.3% on the year before. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wheeled loader exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the major exporter of wheeled loaders, crawler shovel loaders, front-end loaders in ASEAN, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was approx. 57% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Singapore (13%) and Malaysia (11%). The Philippines (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wheeled loaders, crawler shovel loaders, front-end loaders exports, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. The Philippines experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.4%) and Singapore (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (+43 p.p.) and Vietnam (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -3.9% and -39.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest wheeled loader supplier in ASEAN, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 2.2% share.

In Thailand, wheeled loader exports increased at an average annual rate of +47.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-2.9% per year) and Vietnam (-5.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 46% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 292%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+26.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2021, approx. X units of wheeled loaders, crawler shovel loaders, front-end loaders were imported in ASEAN; growing by 40% compared with 2020. In general, imports recorded notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wheeled loader imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Philippines was the largest importer of wheeled loaders, crawler shovel loaders, front-end loaders in ASEAN, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Malaysia (X units). All these countries together held near 46% share of total imports. Cambodia (X units) and Myanmar (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wheeled loaders, crawler shovel loaders, front-end loaders imports, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Myanmar (+25.2%), Cambodia (+6.7%) and Thailand (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.4%) and Malaysia (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+38 p.p.), Thailand (+2.5 p.p.) and Myanmar (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -3.2%, -9.3% and -10.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wheeled loader importing markets in ASEAN were Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +15.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -13.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
