The ASEAN wood chips and particles market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 52% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Production of Wood Chips And Particles in ASEAN
In value terms, wood chips and particles production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN
Wood chips and particles exports rose notably to X cubic meters in 2022, with an increase of 7.9% compared with the previous year. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +70.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Vietnam represented the major exporter of wood chips and particles in ASEAN, with the volume of exports resulting at X cubic meters, which was near 72% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X cubic meters), mixing up a 22% share of total exports. The following exporters - Indonesia (X cubic meters) and Malaysia (X cubic meters) - together made up 5.8% of total exports.
Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood chips and particles exports, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malaysia (+5.6%) and Thailand (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Indonesia (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-7.9 p.p.) and Indonesia (-8.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest wood chips and particles supplier in ASEAN, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam amounted to +13.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+1.7% per year) and Indonesia (+1.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, jumping by 55% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.3%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per cubic meter), while Thailand ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Wood Chips And Particles
Imports in ASEAN
Wood chips and particles imports skyrocketed to X cubic meters in 2022, growing by 144% on the year before. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 162%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 245%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Lao People's Democratic Republic was the key importing country with an import of around X cubic meters, which accounted for 73% of total imports. Indonesia (X cubic meters) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X cubic meters). All these countries together held approx. 24% share of total imports. The Philippines (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Lao People's Democratic Republic increased at an average annual rate of +59.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+60.3%) and Indonesia (+30.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +60.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lao People's Democratic Republic (+70 p.p.), Indonesia (+11 p.p.) and the Philippines (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-82.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips and particles in ASEAN, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Lao People's Democratic Republic amounted to +49.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+34.0% per year) and Thailand (-8.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 173% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per cubic meter), while Thailand ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
