Exports in ASEAN
In 2022, overseas shipments of worked slate decreased by -18.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
In value terms, worked slate exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 142%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Vietnam was the key exporter of worked slate in ASEAN, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 60% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), mixing up a 33% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +13.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest worked slate supplying countries in ASEAN were Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 97% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +16.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, worked slate export price increased by +78.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Worked Slate Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2022, supplies from abroad of worked slate increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, worked slate imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The Philippines was the largest importer of worked slate in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total imports. The following importers - Indonesia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 83% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +22.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, worked slate import price increased by +69.2% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
